Sometimes old flames are the hottest of all . . .
In the quaint little town of Cailkirn, Alaska, it's impossible to keep a secret, especially one as juicy as the unexpected return of Kitty Grant. Tack MacKinnon remembers her wild red curls and even wilder spirit—and still feels the sting from when she shattered his heart in college. But there's a pain in Kitty's gorgeous eyes that guts him to the core, and Tack is determined to do whatever it takes to see the woman he still loves smile again—even if it means taking on her demons as his own.

After fleeing an abusive ex-husband, Kitty decides that the best way to heal her broken heart is to come back home. But she gets a whole new shock when she sees how undeniably sexy Tack has become. More handsome, more muscular, more charming—more everything—he's impossible to resist. Before she knows it, they're reigniting sparks that could set the whole state of Alaska on fire. Yet trust doesn't come easy to Kitty anymore, and as things heat up between her and Tack, she can't help but wonder if one of them is going to get burned . . .
Kitty (Caitlin) Grant left her small Alaskan hometown years ago and went down a different path in life.  She left behind the simple ways and chose to be swayed by the glitz and glamor of LA, which came with a hefty price for her.  The man who stole her away from all she knew and forced her to cut ties turned out to be an abusive, selfish snob, and it took her years to find the strength to get away from his clutches.  Years that Tack MacKinnon, the man who had given his heart to her, was left to grow cold and indifferent when it came to all things Kitty.  So, when Kitty decided going back home was just what she needed, not only did she have to make amends with the family she’d left behind, but she had to find some way to get her best friend to forgive her…and maybe more.

Kitty had really been put through hell with her asshat of an ex, but it was kind of a self-inflicted punishment in the beginning.  She chose to turn her back on her old life for the promise of something bigger and better, and while the abuse at the hands of her husband was of course not her fault, I did have trouble empathizing for her about everything else.  Her husband had essentially wiped the slate clean for her and planted her in a new life with him, and I hated how she dropped Tack like a bad habit.  Knowing that Tack had literally been her BEST friend and had loved her so dearly, I definitely sided with him when he was holding onto his resentment.  But Tack, being the amazing man that he is, wasn’t blind to Kitty’s condition after suffering at the hands of her ex, and wasn’t about to let the Kitty he knew wither away into nothing.

Tack was a bit of a burly bear at times, but I think this made him a more realistic Alaskan native.  He wasn’t jaded by expensive luxuries and he didn’t show his worth through how much money he spent.  He didn’t wear designer clothes and drive around in a fancy car.  He took his business as a trail guide seriously, worked his ass off doing it, and made a name for himself in the process.  He was the exact opposite of the pomp and circumstance Kitty’s ex came with, and it was both refreshing and lust-inducing for her once she took off her blinders.  They both felt the draw, but they also both held each other at arm’s length, for different reasons.  Tack was bound and determined to never let her break his heart again, and Kitty was both afraid he’d never forgive her and unable to fight for what she wanted when it came to him.  As she slowly regained her confidence with the more she settled in and the time she spent finally having more than just Tack’s heart, you could see that she really wanted to fight for it.  It was just a matter of whether or not Tack would be there waiting if she did.

Overall, this was a unique storyline with the small town Alaskan setting, with some hits to the heart strings and a good supply of steamy yumminess!  This will be a fun series to look out for!

Quotes:

Maybe Caitlin needed to remember she was okay too.  That she’d taken the steps she needed to get her life back.  She wasn’t running away from anything now, just returning to safety and the one place maybe she really belonged. ~Loc 80

Even if he didn’t hate her for the past, she was never putting herself at the mercy of a man again.  Not even Tack.  ~Loc 532

“Isn’t it gorgeous?” she breathed, her focus on the subject of the digital picture.  “It looks so delicate, but here it is, surviving trampling wildlife, frigid nighttime temperatures, and spring rainstorms.”
“Not all things that look fragile can be destroyed.” ~Loc 1174
