Before He Was Gone by Becky Wicks
Publication date: Summer 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance
When her rock star boyfriend breaks things off out of the blue, Alyssa applies to hit reality TV show Deserted and to her shock she gets through. Abandoned on a remote island with a bunch of strangers and none of the luxuries she’s become accustomed to, it’s not long before an undeniable attraction to the mysterious Joshua starts complicating things even further.
Joshua’s different to everyone she’s ever known – a traveller, a man with no plan, a world away from the celebrity life she’s left behind. As a series of challenges test their wits and weaknesses, things start heating up in paradise, but in a game designed to break people down, it soon becomes clear that Joshua is hiding a painful secret – one he won’t risk anyone finding out.
Struggling to know where she belongs, Alyssa will have to choose – a life she once loved that wants her back, or a brand new reality that heartbreakingly may just have its limits.
˃˃˃ “Becky does it again, delivering a searingly hot, emotionally intense and brilliantly written book. I loved it.” – Sarah Alderson (author of Hunting Lila, Fated, The Sound)

Becky Wicks wowed me with the first book in this series, and I was thrilled to get my hands on an early copy of this follow-up! One part Survivor and another part tender budding romance, Alyssa and Joshua’s island escapades made my pulse race and my heart happy as they wormed their way into each other’s souls!
I wasn’t sure what to make of these two when we first meet them. They are in very different places in their lives but at the same time both at that crossroads where something huge could really shake them into the right direction. Something like a hefty prize on a reality show called Deserted, where they'll be stranded and forced to rely on their own wits and wilderness know-how. The question was, could they tough it out? Joshua seemed to be living his life as a reckless nomad, and Alyssa was in a Hollywood daze over her crumbling high-profile relationship. But once Alyssa started really thinking about herself beyond all of the glitz and glam, she really began to shine and proved without a doubt that she had what it took...and I loved her! And Joshua, well he won me over quickly with his immediate fall into Tarzan mode when the filming for the show started rolling! He shines as the nature boy who can handle anything thrown at him, and Alyssa didn’t fail to impress as she held her own at every turn. Together they were like the perfect jungle couple, and they gravitated to each other as a result. I loved their sweet moments under the stars, their stolen hot-hot-hot visits to the water, and the way they just seemed to complete each other like some kind of unexpected game show puzzle!
There’s a big twist that is hinted throughout but not fully revealed until late in the story, and I loved it even though it was a bit far-fetched in its delivery. There is more at stake here than just the money for Alyssa and Joshua, and it’s a heartwarming journey that left me smiling. Definitely another awesome story by the talented Becky Wicks, and a perfect end-of-summer read that’s sure to please!
~“How do you know we didn’t meet in a past life, horoscope twin?”
He grins as a crab scuttles past my feet. “You want to talk reincarnation now?”
“These things happen when we don’t have smartphones.”~Loc 1314
~She looks so damn sexy right now. The world stopped moving till that wave shook it up again; my head was comfortably numb for the first time all day but it wasn’t just my cock talking with her pressed up against me. Alyssa the Greek gets into more of my cracks than all of this damn sand. ~Loc 1699
~Maybe it’s selfish of me but I want to know it all. I want to engrave it on my skull, never to be erased; the feel of her curves, the taste of her lips, the passion raging through me like a tsunami. I want her; her wit, her humor, her body, her laughter. ~Loc 2276
