Erin Reviews: Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy 2) by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy 2) by Wendy Higgins-YA Paranormal Romance
Paperback provided by Harper Teen for review

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

Erin's Take:
This was one of the most-anticipated sequels of 2013 for me, and once I started reading it I could not put it down!! Did this second installment live up to the suspense and romance that made Sweet Evil so addicting? My answer would be a very enthusiastic "hell yes!!"

Six months since she last saw the boy she loved, Anna is no longer the sweet little naïve thing she once was; a broken heart and the realization that there are huge changes coming have thickened her skin and hardened her resolve to get stronger and more prepared. Anna always knew she had a fight on her hands, but now she discovers just how big of a role she will play.  Her two sides are constantly at odds, fighting for the upper hand, and she struggles to keep herself from being completely swayed in either direction.  It’s her good side, the angel in her that knows right from wrong and wants to stand up for what’s right, versus her bad side that embraces her role as the daughter of the fallen angel Duke Belial. Anna’s “work” has an intense pull on her, especially now that she is having to give in to these desires in order to keep up appearances, but she fights the urge to let go.

The groundwork is being laid now for the fight that is to come, and the Neph have their work cut out for them.  The trips Anna and Kopano made to find allies seemed like missions of desperation, and there was an ominous sense of foreboding every step of the way.  With every twist and revelation I waited for something awful to happen, and it had me tied in knots!! Through all of the suspense, I was very happy to see the return of our favorite characters as well as some new ones, both ally and enemy, that definitely have me intrigued!

Then there’s Kaidan….K A I D A N…this boy gets sexier, bolder and more worthy of attention with age, just like a fine wine. * le sigh*  I fell so hard for him all over again, and this was not an easy leg of the journey for him and Anna. Time, distance, and secrets between them left a huge gaping hole in both their lives, and it was heartbreaking.  And while we see the new tougher side to Anna, we also see Kaidan’s vulnerability and the depth of his feelings for her, and it made my heart race!!

This was an absolutely incredible second installment to The Sweet Trilogy, with all the thrills and excitement of a debut novel but with the growth and change we need to see with a great series.  Wendy Higgins has proven without a doubt that she's a force to be reckoned with, and Sweet Peril is going to have her readers begging for more!!

“I shut my eyes. I wished I could get inside his head and crawl through the passageways to the secret rooms until I found the one labeled with my name.  How could I shatter that steel door and see what lay hidden inside?” ~ Anna p. 35

“I promised myself I’d never do the work of my demon father—polluting souls—leading humans to abuse their bodies with drugs and alcohol.  I’d been naïve to make such a vow.  I’d been naïve about a lot of things.” ~Anna p. 11
