It's my pleasure to have Nancy Straight on the blog today. On this stop of her Meeting Destiny Blog Tour with Supagurl Tours, I asked her to tell me about her first job. Here's what she had to say.
My first job
I grew up in Iowa and like so many other kids in Iowa, my first real paycheck came from de-tasseling corn and weeding soybeans. For anyone not familiar with farms, de-tasseling is just like it sounds, you walk up and down corn rows pulling the tassels off the top of the corn stalks. It’s an extremely hot, exhausting job, that twenty five years ago paid $7.50 per hour – big bucks for a teenager in the late 80’s. :D
I’ve held remarkably few jobs in my 41 years. From the time I was 16 years old, I’ve never been unemployed – let me find some wood to knock on!
I worked in a department store as a cashier, the cash counter and behind the customer service desk for 2 years. I had this job during two Christmas seasons and it convinced me that I was not cut out for retail sales as a career.
I worked at a car rental agency (National) for 2.5 months. This job abruptly came to an end when I ran a brand new Grand Prix (12 miles on the odometer) into one of Avis’ Berettas. Not a good career move on my part.
I worked as a waitress for 3 months. Loved this job, but the money was horrible.
I was in the Marine Corps for 10 years in the intelligence field. I loved this job but after I left the Marine Corps I was excited to wake up in the morning and not run five miles before breakfast!
I was a civil servant for the Department of Defense for 8 years, in support of Marine Corps programs.
I currently work as a Business Development Manager for an electronics & manufacturing company and write books during my free time!
